After several days missing, the body of Jacob Havel was found floating in the Missouri River at Nebraska City on June 19, 1909. There were several articles speculating on when or under what conditions he had disappeared. Jacob lived with his widowed mother, Jennie, in the Gibson area of South Omaha and had been working at the Livesey & Co. brick yard. It was reported that he had spent the night before partying and drinking heavily upon return to the house early Sunday, June 13, then leaving, so the drowning may have been accidental, and not necessarily suicide or a murder/robbery as was earlier speculated.
Several days of in-depth news articles were published over the week of the incident including:
Omaha World Herald Thursday, Jun 17, 1909, page 3, and Saturday, Jun 19, 1909, page 6;
Omaha Daily Bee, Saturday, Jun 19, 1909, page 17, and Monday, Jun 21, 1909, page 2; and
The Alliance Herald of Alliance, NE, Thursday, Jun 24, 1909, page 9.
