Son of Roy Winfield McCarthy and Therese "Tess" Martha Preston. Both parents died in the 1918 flu pandemic and he and his siblings were raised in Minnesota. J. Preston was the brother of author, Mary McCarthy and actor, Kevin McCarthy. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in WWII. Following the war, he began a 32-year career in banking at Equitable Security Trust Company/Bank of Delaware.
