Four cars went form Merced to Watsonville on March 25th carrying relatives and friends to attend in the Catholic Church of Watsonville the first public services held by Robert Thornton who was ordained to the priesthood on the 17th of March in Los Angeles. Robert, 26, is a son of W. D. Thornton. His mother is a member of the pioneer Vasche family of Athlone. The father, Will Thornton is assistant post master of Watsonville.
The newly ordained priest was born in Yosemite and attended schools in Watsonville. In Yosemite his father bought out Nelson Salter, who conducted the Yosemite store. When Will Thornton left Yosemite they came to Merced and lived on the Thornton ranch two years, going to Watsonville in 1920.
Robert has two brothers and a sister. Of these Will J Thornton is in France in the air service, while Joseph, another brother, has been a prisoner of the Germans since a year ago last November. A sister, Mary Thornton is a nurse in Watsonville. Robert is a grandson of the late Mr and Mrs William Thornton and Mr and Mrs Vasche.
