Named after his father, John served the USA during World War II, as a PFC from Colorado in the US Army. He was one of the 91 miners who perished in the Sunshine Mine Disaster, the deadliest event in Idaho history. A memorial statue stands over twelve feet tall at exit 54 of I-90, at the base of the Big Creek Canyon, between the towns of Kellogg and Osburn, Idaho.
