Dr. William Thomas Atkinson served in the 13th Kentucky as the first assistant surgeon in the Spanish-American War. He was a prominent, well-to-do physician and druggist at Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.
In the 1880s he was instrumental in exterminating smallpox during an epidemic on Beaver Creek.
He received his literary education at the Gallia Academy, then attended the St. Louis Medical College, subsequently
graduating from the Kansas City Medical College in 1872. He opened an office in St. Louis after graduation, but
owing to failing health went to Charleston, West Virginia where he practiced for two years.
Then he moved to Ashland, Kentucky and practiced with Dr. J.W. Martin for one year. He then practiced medicine in Magoffin County, Kentucky and then located at Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.
In 1876, he was appointed as United State Pension Examining
Surgeon, a position he was still holding in 1887.
