Born the son of Charles H. and Ethel Gilpatrick Dawley, he attended elementary and high school in Royalton, and then-Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin where he was a brother of the Wisconsin Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon (SigEp) Fraternity & a member of the Class of 1921.
During World War I, he enlisted as a Private, U.S. Army (Infantry) in APR 1918, and served as such until being commissioned a Second Lieutenant in OCT, and served with the Calvary at Camp Gordon, Georgia.
On October 15,1920, Dawley married Helene Robertson in Chicago. The couple moved to Great Falls, where they lived from 1921 to 1965, and where he was manager of the Montana Division of the John Leslie Paper Company.
In World War II, he served as a Colonel with the 163rd Infantry Regiment from 1941 to 1945 in Australia, New Guinea, and The Philippines. He retired in 1965, moving to Whitefish Lake where he made his home until moving to the Veterans Home.
Dawley was a life member of the Masons, a Shriner, and a member of Knights Templar and Mecca of New York and Chamblee, Georgia. He also belonged to the Whitefish American Legion, the United Methodist Church of Whitefish, and the Montana Press Association.
Survivors include one son, Lt. Col. James R. Dawley of Hampton, Virginia; one daughter, Mrs. John (Lorna) Schwartz of Kalispell; one brother, John M. of Olympia, Washington, three sisters, Mrs. Richard (Cres) Best, and Mrs. Frank (Lorna) Skadane of Visalia, California, and Mrs. E.J. (Maude) Hartley of San Diego, and six grandchildren.
