His appointment by the school committee on August 14, 1895, read: "David Butler is appointed in charge and janitor of the new high school building and superintendent of the village grammar school with a stipend of $50 a month and an additional $3 a week for an assistant." He served as caretaker of the old Lawrence Academy from 1892 until the present building was erected. As janitor of the academy, now Legion Hall, he saw graduates who wore Prince Albert coats and leg-o'-mutton sleeves.

Mr. Butler was born in Falmouth, February 9, 1860, the son of Edward and Evelina. (Green) Butler. His birthplace was the white cottage on Locust street, now1 a summer home of the A. E. McVitty family, next to the house where his only child, Mrs. W. Merritt Barstow, and her family live. He attended the village grammar school in the building now Redmen's Hall and Lawrence Academy. His first employment was in a New Bedford grocery store. From there he went to Kittery, Maine, where he worked as a painter.

In 1883 he returned to Falmouth and married Miss Gertrude Ann Fisher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jabez B. Fisher of Hatchville. Mrs. Butler died in April, 1931. In December. 1936. the school committee partially retired Mr. Butler by relieving him of many janitorial duties at the high school. He continued to draw a $1,000 salary and served as assistant to Felix Marchessault. Until Mr. Marchessault was transferred from the Hall school, Mr. Butler was the only janitor ever employed at the Lawrence high school.
