Body Found. (abstract re: suicide of John Steigel near the Lake district)

...Last Summer, at Silver Mountain, Alpine county, W. L. Flippen, cornered in an unoccupied house, for halting the stage and shooting the driver, shot himself to death while the officers were at the door. He had removed his coat, vest and boots, laid himself out, crossed his left arm on the chest, and the recoil threw the right arm into a like position, the hand retaining the pistol, and no powder mark was on the temple. That was a clear case of suicide...
(Bodie Chronicle, 5/17/1879)

“W.L. Flippen, for various crimes, had been warned to leave Silver Mountain. He disappeared, but last Thursday morning suddenly appeared on the stage road to the Exchequer mill, and, holding a shotgun toward Bruso, the stage driver, cried out, “I want to ride,” and then fired, wounding him severely. Pursuit was soon made by citizens of Silver Mountain, and that day they found Flippen’s body in an old house, he having shot himself with a revolver with suicidal intent. He was a native of Tennessee, and aged 44.” (June 6, 1878 Sac’to Daily Union).

Shortly before his death, Flippen had opened "Flippen's I.X.L. Store" in Silver Mountain in January, 1878, selling groceries, hardware, and clothing. (Chronicle, Jan. 5, 1878).
