A. Keith Jernigan, 87, died December 7, 2015. He was born in Little Rock, the son of Charles Pate and Alta Lucas Jernigan. A 1947 graduate of Little Rock High School, he furthered his education at Little Rock Junior College and the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.

Keith was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, having served in the Korean War. He retired as the Regional Group Manager for Northwestern National Life Insurance Company, a position he held for thirty years.

An avid reader and historian, he gave credit for his love of history to his fifth grade teacher who made the subject come vibrantly alive to her students. He was committed to the preservation of historical sites and artifacts. Over the years he spoke to many groups on a variety of historical subjects, many of which dealt with Arkansas and the Civil War. A Life Member of the Arkansas Historical Association, he was also a longtime member of the Pulaski County Historical Society, The Arkansas United Methodist Historical Society, Friends of the Old State House, the Historic Arkansas Museum, and was a past president of the local chapter of the Civil War Round Table.

Never having been a Boy Scout himself, he enjoyed working with the Scouts, particularly during the years he accompanied them on their long term camping trips to Wyoming. Trout fishing in the White River at Calico Rock and tent camping in the Ozarks were two things he loved.

Through his love of history, he became interested in genealogy and this led to membership in the Sons of the American Revolution, The Jamestowne Society, Magna Charta Barons, The Colonial Order of the Crown, and the Descendents of Charlemagne. In 2004 he was awarded the "Cross of Military Honor" by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Keith served on the board of the Colony West Home Owner's Association for several terms, during one of which he served as president. He was appointed to several terms on the Board of Little Rock's Historic Oakland Cemetery and served as president during one of these terms.
A member of St. James United Methodist Church since 1971, he had served on the board and was a member of the "Lunch Bunch." He was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Survivors are his wife of sixty years, Frances Hook Jernigan; children, Mark Jernigan (Analise), Cynthia Maddox (Randy), Elizabeth Switzer (Steve), and David Jernigan (Stefanie). In addition, he is survived by 11 grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. James United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 10 at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Welcome Center. Memorials may be made to the St. James Endowment Fund, The Butler Center of the Central Arkansas Library System, or a charity of one's choice.
