Herman Cecil “Pokey” Crane, 94, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, with his girls by his side.

After a three-year battle with cancer, he died while at “Crane’s Roost,” his home on Lake Gaston. Herman was born and raised in Edgerton, Va., lived in Newport News, Va., for many years, and then moved to Lake Gaston in North Carolina.

Herman joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and retired after 20 years of service. He then worked as an electrician with NASA at Langley Air Force Base where he worked for 18 years.

After his second retirement, he and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Lake Gaston. He was an avid wood worker and loved helping Evelyn make crafts of all kinds. The two of them loved traveling across the country with various friends and relatives. Herman was very involved in working with Habitat for Humanity and helped do the electrical work in 14 houses before finally giving it up at age 83. Another of his passions was the Lions Club where he enjoyed various projects that they did. He loved going to Camp Dogwood with the Lions and also working in the “hushpuppy booth” at the annual seafood festival.

Herman was a long-time member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Newport News; though after moving to N.C., he and Evelyn were able to attend the Crane family church, Edgerton United Methodist. Herman was involved in many aspects of the church and helped plan mission trips to Florida and South Carolina to help after hurricanes Hugo and Andrew. He was also instrumental in getting the Edgerton Cemetery back into shape and making sure it was kept up for many years.

Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Michie Crane; his son, Scott Crane; and three sisters and one brother.

He is survived by his daughters, Skeeter (Johnny) Coleman and Michie (Bob) Powell; granddaughter, Michele Coleman Nestel (Mark); grandsons, John Coleman IV (Ashley), Cameron Powell and Jackson Powell; his three great-granddaughters, Maddie Nestel and Leeann and Rebecca Coleman; his younger brother, Melvin “Pecky” Crane; many members of the Crane family; and, of course, his much-loved Michie Family members.

Herman, also known as Pokey, Chief, Dad and Gramps, will be sorely missed by all. The family would like to thank the ladies from Community Home Care and Hospice for the excellent care they gave Dad.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 26 at Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News. A funeral service will follow at noon in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Edgerton United Methodist Church, 92 County Pond Road, Edgerton, VA 23868, or to your local Habitat for Humanity or Lions Club.
