Born August 7, 1836, Charles Merrill Benson spent his youth as farm boy in Landgrove, Burlington County, Vermont. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Merrill, as he would be known to his comrades, enlisted and became a member of Company G, First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He was 24 years old, stood 5' 7" tall, had a sandy complexion, blue eyes and light colored hair. A competent soldier, on Sept 5, 1863, Charles was promoted to corporal. This was a dangerous rank since corporals stood in the front ranks or acted as file closers. He participated in all the major battles, except Gettysburg.
He was badly wounded, during the final action of the regiment, at Bristow Station. On Oct 14, 1863, while in the skirmish line a bullet hit him in the side and passed through his knapsack. He was thought to be missing and Lt De Gray sent Ed Needham to look for Charles. Ed eventually found him at a field hospital. Charles returned to the regiment on Jan 31, 1864. He was discharged with the regiment, on May 5, 1864.
On May 31, 1866, he married Ann Eliza Pool.
Merrill's died in Morristown on September 12, 1921, at the age of 85.
