He served for 18 months and fought at Jacksonville, Mississippi, Champion Hills, and during the siege and capture of Vicksburg, where he was wounded in the right side from a musket, which was later the cause of his discharge, as well as the malaria he had contracted. He received a military pension for his service. He married Elizabeth Rachel Rinehart on August 19, 1862 in Bureau County, Illinois.
