Born and brought up in Cheadle, Cheshire, Bill always wanted to join the Air Force. He got his wish in 1942, he was an observer/gunner before he trained in Canada on Lancaster Bombers as Navigator/Bomb Aimer. He stayed in the RAF after the war and did many tours overseas. Leaving the RAF in the mid 1950's he settled with his wife in Lincolnshire. After many years and moves they returned to Lincolnshire in 1992.
Despite declining health Bill remained active and independent. He was honoured with an O.B.E by the Queen for services to the Air Training Corp.
