Lyle H. Black, 92, formerly of Mitchell, SD, passed away on December 17, 2015 at Iowa Methodist Hospital surrounded by his family.

Lyle was born in Mitchell in 1923 and grew up on the family farm. He attended Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD, until WW II interrupted his education. Lyle enlisted in the Navy in 1943. He attended officer training at the Philadelphia Naval Yard and Naval Training School at Harvard University. He served in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning from the war in 1946, he completed his business degree at Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell.

Lyle was united in marriage with Norma Jean Tastad in May 1947. The couple made their home in Mitchell and had two children, Eric and Marcia.

Lyle enjoyed a 45 year career in sales. A sincere desire to provide value to his clients, a quick wit and sense of humor were his calling cards. He began his career with John Deere selling farm equipment. Following John Deere, he was a financial advisor for Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial) for 30 years.

In 1999, Lyle and Norma moved to Urbandale, IA, to be closer to their daughter and family.

Lyle enjoyed spending time with his family and provided loving care to Eric, who had muscular dystrophy. He also enjoyed his many friends, pheasant and duck hunting, the New York Times crossword puzzle, Sudoku and a competitive game of backgammon with his grandson, Steven.

He was preceded in death by Norma and Eric. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter and husband, Jim and Marcia Clary, granddaughter and husband, Kristin and Nick Meyer and grandson, Steven Clary. Bringing special joy to him the last few years were his great-grandchildren, Madilyn and Logan Meyer.

A memorial service will be held in Mitchell at a later date.
