Rome - Charles E. Traxel, 89 of, who invented a number of practical gadgets during a long career of mechanical ingenuity, died Monday in a Rome hospital where he had been a patient three weeks.
Mr. Traxel assigned 30 of his inventions to General Cable Corp. where he was employed for 23 years until his 1932 retirement. He had also worked at the Pohl Machine Co., Rome Locomotive Works American Can Co.
After that, he conducted a wholesale motor oil business at his home for a number of years.
Among Mr. Traxel's inventions were a knee action for automobiles and an automatic pick-up two - wheeled truck for lifting and transporting heavy barrels of oil.
As early as 1891, Mr. Traxel and George DePaul of Ava were working on a "horseless carriage," but the "gasoline wonder" failed to work and the project was abandoned.
Son of Christian an Elizabeth Gerwig Traxel, he was born in Ava on June 28, 1871 and was educated in the Ava school.
He married Rose F. Pohl here on Feb. 19, 1895. She died March 27, 1947.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William (Gladys) McMahon, at home, and Mrs. Arthur
(Joyce) Dean, Verona Beach; two sisters, Mrs. Leon Bellinger, Ava, and Mrs. Lillian Grubel, Sherrill; two brothers, Albert J. Traxell, Rome, and Eugene W. Traxel, Ava; four grandchildren, Paul McMahon, Binghamton; Mrs. Earl Hart, Rome, A-3C Brian McMahon, Andrews AFB, MD and Robert A. Dean, Verona Beach, and two great grandchildren.
