Note: Tickner is spelled (or misspelled) variously over time.

Youngest of the seven (known) children born to Roswell Tichner, Jr. & Jean Smith, his Kane County Death Record lists him as born in Wales Hollow, Steuben Co., NY (Wales Hollow is actually in Erie Coo., NY) but his family was included on the 1820 Howard, Steuben Co., NY census.

His father Roswell, born in Steuben Co., NY on 20 June 1782, was the son of Roswell Tichner, mother unknown, while his mother Jean, born in Dunlop, County Ayre, Scotland on 10 Sept 1780, was the daughter of Robert Smith & Sarah Dalrymple.

James married first on January 15th, 1842 to his cousin #1 Julia Maria Ticknor, with whom he had several children before her untimely passing in 1845 just one week after their only surviving child, Julia Maria nee Tickner (Wm J.) Long (D. W.) Rolph (1845-1918) was born. (It should be noted that the Howard Cemetery, where mother Jean, wife Julia and two of James' infant children are buried also has a grave for a James H Tichner (no dates) which might be another infant child).

After the death of his wife, James headed west as had several of his siblings. He married Orpha Ann Ward in DuPage Co., IL on February 26th, 1846, with whom he had five children: Edwin Henry (1850-1936), Albert, Mertia May, Stella Blanche & Birdy. His father Roswell also journeyed west and remarried to Mary Wilson (likely previously married) in Kane Co., IL on May 19th, 1846. He is believed to have headed on to Lamont, Buchanan Co., IA where James' brother John G Tickner had settled but no records are found to confirm.
