Residence Bath County, VA.; 25 year-old grazier; 5'9", light complexion, light hair, gray eyes.
Enlisted at Bath Court House, VA., for 12 months' service on 6/6/1861, he was mustered into Captain William D. Ervin's Company "Bath Grays", 25th (Heck's) Virginia Infantry, as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company G, 25th Virginia Infantry.)
POW 7/13/1861 when his company was captured in Battle of Corrick's Ford; Paroled 7/17/1861 at Beverly, VA.; company dissolved.
Enlisted 12/3/1862 at Camp Washington, VA., he was Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into (1st) Company E, 18th Virginia Cavalry. (This company subsequently became (2nd) Company G, 18th Virginia Cavalry.)
Resigned 10/1/1863 due to health.

The 18th Cavalry Regiment was organized in December, 1862. Most of its members had served in the 1st Regiment Virginia Partisan Rangers (subsequently the 62nd Regiment Virginia Infantry).
