John married Willie Mae Brown from Tennessee, on December 29, 1886, in Madison County, Alabama. They had 5 children, Lenora (Harris, LeGard), Bessie (Sanderson, Boberg), & John Birrel, born in Alabama, and Lona Mae (Bradford), & Dewey Jessie, born in Texas.
Willie died about 1900, approximately 2 years after their last child, Dewey, was born. Her death and burial were probably in the community of Handley Village, now a part of Fort Worth, Texas.
John married Nancy Newman in 1903 in Lincoln County, Tennessee and they had two daughters, Sadie and Agness.
John died in Rusk, Cherokee Co, Texas.

Funeral services for J.P. Bernard, 82, who died suddenly at his home in Palestine Monday, were held Tuesday, December 23, at 2 o'clock at the Brushy Creek Church, with the Rev. H.D. Myrant and Loye Ruckman officiating.
Mr. Bernard, a native of Alabama, is survived by two sons, J.B. Bernard and D.J. Bernard, both of Palestine; three daughters, Mrs. W.E. Legard of Palestine, Mrs. Pete Bradford of Frankston and Mrs. Bessie Sanderson of Huntsville; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
