Johann Phillip Huet (Hewitt) was born in Exeter Township, Berks County, PA to Frantz Carl and Mary (?) Hujet (Huyett, Huyat, Huet) where Frantz, Phillip's father, lived near his brother Peter's family (Whittaker, 1952). Previously, Frantz briefly worked as a ferry operator for foot passengers bound across the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The ferry was located at Old High Street (now Market St.) near 13th Street Pennsylvania Railroad Station. Source: H.T. Huyett, 1909.

Frantz moved to Berks County, PA to be closer to his brother, Johann Peter Huyat II (b.1703, Germany) who lived in Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Later he moved to Adams County, PA and then to Cavetown, Washington County, MD to live with or near his son Ludwig at "Huyett Meadows" in his old age. H.T. Huyett and William Whittaker speculate that Frantz died there. H.T. explains his brother, Johann Peter Huyat II, frequent horse rides from Exeter Township, Berks County, PA to visit his "Maryland brother".

Johann Phillip was Frantz Carl and Mary's third son. Phillip's siblings were first born Ludwig (Find A Grave Memorial# 60361928), Johann Peter (b.1743), and Elizabeth (b.1745). Peter settled next to his brother, Phillip's, farm in Amwell Township, Washington County, PA and together founded Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Glyde, Washington County, PA that was on neighbor, Michael Simon's property, "Blackberry". Phillip's headstone and obituary (a write up that references his obit that accounts his life) records his age at the time of his death as 78. Could it be he and sister, Elizabeth, were twins using R.M. Bell's records?

His sister, Elizabeth married Jacob Leffler and then Rev. Johann Casper Simler and settled in Indiana. She also died in 1823 and is buried in Corydon, Harrison County, Indiana. It is very likely that his brother, Peter Huet, is buried on his property in Amwell Township, Washington County, PA.

Johann Phillip's half-siblings, mother of Maria Quattelbaum, were Jacob (b.1747 - died young); Jacob Huiet (b.30 Nov 1748 married Christina Schumacher and perhaps moved to Crims Creek Community, Peak, Newberry County, SC); Mary (married George Wonsetler, Find A Grave Memorial# 94283787); Capt. Martin Dietrich Huyett (b.1751, Find A Grave Memorial# 43537166), and Nicholas (b. 16 Dec 1753, Find A Grave Memorial# 8282054).

The memorial for Captain Dietrich Huyett (FAGM# 43537166) shows his birthplace as "Stonington, New London County, Connecticut" which is incorrect according to researcher R.M. Bell and other sources. His wife, Elizabeth Searle, was indeed born there. Dietrich was not English. He bravely fought and died against the British and Indian forces at the Battle of Wyoming (Valley) near present day Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Phillip married Eva Mong in 1771 in Frederick County (now Washington County), MD and likely lived in Huyett's Crossroads, MD. The Mong's were neighbors to Ludwig Huyett, Phillip's brother.

He and brother, Peter Huet, served in the Revolutionary War, as did their half-brothers, Jacob, Dietrich, and Nicholas.

There is circumstantial evidence that Phillip farmed an area in Huyett's Crossroads (now Huyett), MD about 4 miles west of Hagerstown, MD prior to leaving Maryland for Washington County, Pennsylvania. The homestead is at US 63/Hwy 40 and in 1859 was owned by Daniel Huyett. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huyett,_Maryland.

All of Phillip and Eva's 12 children (except Susanna who died at age 30; and Ludwig who lived in Washington, PA) moved to Ohio from Washington County, PA. They raised 4 boys and 8 girls. Susanna died in Wolfdale in 1818 and is buried near her parent's graves in the Hewitt Family Burial Ground. Ludwig resided in Washington, PA and is buried there.

Phillip and Eva's children are: 1) Rev. Johann Heinrich (1772-1855) FAGM# 22982673 married Esther Simon daughter of Michael Simon mentioned above; 2) Ludwig (1773-1864) married (1) Catharine Horn FAGM# 92580634 and (2) Mary (?); 3) Mary Magdalena (1775-1830) FAGM# 27627996 married Henry Eberhard FAGM# 28966427; 4) Maria Catharina (1777-1843) FAGM# 27627988 married (1) Jacob Dager and then after her sister Mary died -- Maria Catharina married (2) Henry Eberhard FAGM# 28966427; 5) Margaret (1779-1830) married George Frank; 6) Elizabeth (1782-1847) married Jacob Harsh FAGM# 29215272; 7) Phillip, Jr. (1784-1830) FAGM# 139693870 married Margaret Swinehart FAGM# 139693955; 8) George (1785-1867) FAGM# 57999267 married Anna Dager FAGM# 57999270; 9) Magdalena (1787-1822) married Mr. Wylie and moved to Stark Co., Ohio; 10) Susanna (1789-1818) who apparently died as unmarried -- her headstone is inscribed "Hewit" and not her husband's name; 11) Sarah (1792-1822 married Mr. Reber; and 12) Esther (1795-1866) FAGM# 63985291 married Adam Miller FAGM# 63985263.

Johann Phillip died in Canton Township, Washington County, PA. Dr. Raymond Martin Bell reports in his research on the Hewitt family that Phillip and Eva were buried in "Hewitt Cemetery". There are five documented cemeteries named "Hewitt Cemetery" in the area surrounding Washington County, PA.

Their home church was Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Glyde, Washington County, PA and would make sense that their graves would be in the churchyard cemetery. Phillip and his brother Peter were founding members of the church along with Michael Simon, Esther Simon's father. Esther was his daughter-in-law. Phillip was an elder and Peter a deacon. "Dutch Glory: Church Register, 1791-1860, of the Bethlehem Lutheran and Reformed Church, Bethlehem Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania" written by Margaret Miller Simon recorded the churchyard burials.

Furthermore, the cemetery could not be "Hewitt Cemetery" in Rices Landing, Greene County, PA because it was founded in 1870, although there are reportedly burials occurring prior to 1870. "Hewitt Cemetery" in Huston Township, Clearfield Co., PA is more distant from Washington County and no known close relatives are buried there. Also, it is not likely the "Hewitt Cemetery" in Porter Township, Huntingdon County, PA is the subject cemetery because those graves are family of his brother's Ludwig's descendants.

There is also "Hewitt Cemetery" in McCracken, Alleppo Township, Greene County, PA. Phillip's brother, Peter's, sons (one being Henry Hewit) moved to Greene County, PA and are buried there on Henry's old farm. Peter died before Phillip bought "Leets Fancy" about 1808 in Canton Township, now Wolfdale, PA so it is impossible that Peter is also buried in the "Hewitt Family Burial Ground" cemetery.

Located “1 mile west” of N. McCracken Rd (Hwy 3016)/Hewitt Run (39 51’07.45”N, 80 29’40.51”W) places Greene County, PA Hewitt Cemetery at a farm on the left of the road. Reportedly “located on Artie Houston Farm, 1 mile west of Sugar Grove (Church), on hill, not on road". Source: P. Houston, 1949.

There is, however, "Hewitt Family Burial Ground", Canton Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania as reported by Gina Nestor, 2001. It is "West of Hewitt Road and south of Rt. 844 in the woods above". It has been confirmed that this "Hewitt Cemetery" is indeed the one described by R.M. Bell where Phillip and Eva, and daughter, Susannah have been laid to rest.

That simple description would place the cemetery location just west of the intersection of present day South Hewitt Ave and SR 844 (Jefferson Ave) in Wolfdale, Canton Township, Washington County, PA. There are woods along a ridge line overlooking a stream, Sugar Run. 40 degrees, 11 minutes, 30.75 seconds North and -80 degrees, 17 minutes, 22.13 seconds West.
