Charles attended the Old Chester Academy where he met Amelia. At age 17 he taught a district school in Chester. His business career began with employment in a bank at Black River, Vt. and continued in private and National banks in Canton and Peoria, Ill. Charles came to Illinois in 1857 and soon after sent for his wife and baby daughter. Canton became their home for the rest of their lives with the exception of a short time in Peoria. He was mayor of Canton 1867, active in the Congregational Church and prominent in civic affairs.
