DeRidder, La., July 26. - John Abney, a drayman of this city, was killed today by a team of horses owned by his son. Mr. Abney, in company with several other men, was standing in the street talking, when a horse near him bit at another, and when Mr. Abney stepped out of the way he stumbled and fell backwards upon the whiffletrees of a team behind him. One of the team commenced kicking and severely injured the man before the bystanders could rescue him. He died shortly afterward. Mr. Abney is survived by his wife and seven children, the youngest of whom is fourteen years of age. [Times Picayune, July 27, 1914; submitted by MZ]

Note, most Ancestry trees have John W. as son of James Paul Abney, Jasper Co., MS. This is NOT true as James Paul's son was John WESLEY not WEBSTER, and, John Wesley never lived in Louisiana.
