Phalan OBryan, 79, a long-time resident of Cashmere, died early Thursday, Aug. 10, 1995, at the Cashmere Convalescent Center. He was born on Jan. 2, 1916, in Browns Valley, Minn., to Earl and Mabel (Raffensperger) OBryan. As a young boy, he moved with his family to the Black Hills area of South Dakota. It was there where he grew up and received his education.
His father raised horses and he grew up attending to the needs of the farm. On Aug. 27, 1938, he married Iva M. Woods in Custer, S.D. The couple moved to the state of Washington in 1941 and made a home in the Everett area.
There, Mr. OBryan worked in the ship yards during the war, building battleships for military duty. He also owned and operated a small convenience store for a time. In the early 1950s, the family moved to Monitor. Mr. O'Bryan worked at the Wenatchee Safeway store as a meat cutter. He then worked as the meat cutter in Monitor at the Monitor Market In 1967, the family moved to Cashmere. Mr. OBryan began work with Simpsons Market as a meat cutter, and worked there for several years. When the store closed, he began work with Tree Top of Cashmere and worked there as a press operator.
He worked there until his retirement in the late 1970s.Mr. OBryan was a member of the Teamsters Union Local No. 760 with Tree Top. He was also a member of the Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife, Iva M. O'Bryan of Cashmere; his four sons, Harold F. O'Bryan of Cashmere, Robert E. OBryan of Wenatchee, Bill L. OBryan of Wenatchee and Gary C. OBryan of Cashmere; his 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his two brothers, Dale O'Bryan of South Dakota and Earl OBryan of Camano Island; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and three brothers.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Cashmere City Cemetery. Pastor Tim Wilbur officiated. If desired, memorials may be made in OBryans name to the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
Arrangements were by Braun Funeral Home of Cashmere.
