Enlisted, 1915, in Troop B, Squadron A, NYNG, New York City. He served in Troop B with his brother Joseph Fayhs Cook.

Besides his brother his uncle George Ernest Fahys Sr. served in Squadron A, 1898 - 1910 and his cousin George Ernest Fahys Jr., 1914 - 1916.

World War 1,he attended, OTC, May 12, 1917 at Plattsburg Barrack, NY and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Field Artillery, August 15, 1917. promoted 1st Lieutenant, July 2, 1918 and Captain October 25, 1918.

He was assigned to the 5th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Division and shipped out for France September 17, 1917. He saw heavy combat during the war and returned to the States July 2, 1918. He was assigned as Instructor of artillery at Camp Taylor, KY, August 1918, was discharged from the service, January 18, 1919, Camp Taylor, KY.
