"Henry Bateman, Pioneer Napa Educator, Passes Away In Hospital at Eureka
Henry Bateman, years ago a prominent educator of Napa, and a member of a pioneer family which in early days resided in the vicinity of Oakville in this county, passed away recently at Union Labor Hospital in Eureka Humbolt County, according to the Humbolt Times.
Henry Bateman will be remembered by many old-time friends in this valley.
He was a son of the late Jonathan Bateman and was a native of New York. He came to Napa with his parents in 1869 and lived on a ranch south of Oakville. Here he grew to manhood. For a number of years he taught school at Rutherford. At one time he served on the County Board of Education. He took an active part in politics and at one time was a candidate for the Democratic nomination for Superintendent of Schools, but lost the nomination.
Mr. Bateman married Nancy Whitton, a member of a prominent pioneer family of Napa Valley, and two sons were born to the union.
The sons are now residing in San Francisco.
It was some thirty-five years or forty years ago that Mr. Bateman left Napa Valley.
He was 68 years of age at the time of his demise."
