Elizabeth F "Bettie" Windle Harrison was born on May 11, 1860, in Lebanon, Missouri, to Joseph Washington and Mary Louise (Wilson) Windle. She had a younger sister, Lee Ann. Their mother died when Bettie was barely 5 years old, and her father quickly remarried, giving her 5 more sisters and 4 brothers.

Bettie married Joseph E Harrison on August 10, 1881, in her hometown. They had two daughters, Mae and Lucie. Both girls and Bettie got typhoid fever and became very ill. Mae recovered, but 15-month-old Lucie died on March 5, 1886, and Bettie died the following week, March 12, 1886, at the age of 25. They were buried in the Lebanon City Cemetery.

Joe never remarried; he and Mae moved to Oklahoma, where she married and raised a family. When Joe died in 1925, his son-in-law had his body shipped to Lebanon, where he was buried next to his wife and daughter, as he had requested.
