Obituary:

MRS. MARY BALLENTINE, AGED RESIDENT, IS DEAD

Date for Funeral Not to Be Set Until Word is Received From a Son Living at a Distance.

Mrs. Mary Ballentine, aged eighty-two years, passed away this morning at 1:55 o'clock at the family residence, 1013 Charleston avenue.  Death was due to the infirmities of old age and to a complication of other troubles. Mrs. Ballentine had been ill for a short time only.

Funeral service probably will be conducted on Friday morning at nine o'clock from the Church of the Immaculate Conception.  The date will not be fixed definitely until word is received from a son of Mrs. Ballentine living in the state of Washington.

Mrs. Ballentine was born in Lowell, Mass., but she lived in the state of Illinois for fifty-five years.  She and her husband, James Ballentine, came to Mattoon when the Big Four shops were moved to this city from Litchfield, they having lived in that city for a number of years.

Surviving, in addition to the husband, are seven children and two sisters, one living in Adrian, Mich., the other in Toledo, O.

- The Daily Journal-Gazette (Mattoon, IL), Wed, 8 Dec 1915, pg. 6

Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Welch departed Friday night for their home in Adrian, Mich., having been summoned here by the death of Mrs. Welch's mother[sic], Mrs. James Ballentine.

- The Daily Journal-Gazette (Mattoon, IL), Sat, 11 Dec 1915, pg. 6

Note – This is actually Mary's half-sister Margaret (Gilduff) Welch and her husband Dexter.
