Curt and Joy Knudsen were beloved members of St. Thomas. I admired them so much. My son and Curt and Joy's grandson Willy went to school together and were friends in their younger years. I appreciate the memorial that you wrote.

Yes, Joy’s cremains are in the St. Thomas Columbarium, same niche as Curt’s. It is my understanding that Curt had kept Joy’s cremains as the columbarium was not added until 2009. Curt and Joy are together in heaven; and on earth, in a urn or box that their son Steve crafted.

OBITUARY:

Curtis Norman Knudsen, age 85, passed away December 11 at IU Health Bloomington Hospice. A memorial service will be held for him at St. Thomas Lutheran Church 2 PM Friday, December 18, 2015, Rev. Lyle McKee officiating. His cremains will be interred in the columbarium at the church.

Curt was born in Yankton, SD on December 2, 1930, son of Russell Bernhard Knudsen and Josephine Helene (Anderson) Knudsen. He married Joy Ellen (Sly) Knudsen of Platte, SD on December 9, 1951. They met and fell in love while students at Yankton College.

Curt trained as a chemist and mathematician. He spent much of his working life in research administration, first with General Electric and then with Battelle Memorial Institute. His early work years were spent in our country's nuclear weapons program and he later worked in nuclear medicine and nuclear waste disposal. He retired in 1992 and pursued his interests in birding, English and American history and the world of finance. He also was an accomplished jazz saxophonist and maintained a large collection of jazz music.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy, of 55 years and his parents. He is survived by his two sons, Steve Knudsen, of Stanley, NM and Dan Knudsen of Bloomington, IN, his daughter-in-law Linda (Spicer) Knudsen of Bloomington, IN and grandsons Zack Knudsen and Will Knudsen, both of Bloomington, IN.
