Bryson City - William Robert Ayers, 75, of the Maple Springs Community, went to be with the Lord Saturday evening, April 10, 2004, after a period of declining health.

Bob, as he was known by his family and friends, was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Swain County, where he was a resident his entire life. He had dedicated his life to his Lord, his family, and his country. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Army as a member of the artillery. Bob was a retiree of the Singer Furniture Company where he was a dry kiln operator. He was a member of the Maple Springs Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He loved the great outdoors, where his most enjoyable hours were spent working in his beloved garden. He was the son of the late John and Minda Ayers of Ela.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lou Mae Breedlove Ayers; his daughter, Becky Lambert and her husband, Jack, of Cherokee; his sons, Paul Ayers and his wife, Cindi, of Bryson City and Gary Ayers and his wife, Byna, of Balsam; his sisters, Louise Hurley and her husband, Robert, of Bryson City and Joann Bradley and her husband, David, of Bryson City; brothers, Boyd Ayers and his wife, Gwen,of Ela and David Ayers and his wife, Gladys, of Homer, Ga.; grandsons, Damon and Brett Lambert of Cherokee and Ben Ayers of Balsam; granddaughters, Dawn Anthony of Cullowhee and Sheena Kaler of Bryson City; and one great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Anthony of the home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Maple Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy Lindsay and Tom Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bill Moody Funeral Home, 285 Main St, Bryson City.
