According to a family history written by Asa's son, Jeremiah Griffin Buell, Asa enlisted for three years in the Continental Army and was in the battles of Germantown and Monmouth. He lived the first two thirds of his life on the family farm on Roast Meat Hill near Killingworth CT. He was commissioned Captain in the militia in 1795, and elected to the CT state legislature in 1802. He married Mercy Porter on Dec. 30 1784 in Haddam CT. In December 1805, he drove a sleigh west and bought 22 acres near LeRoy, Genesee County NY. He returned to get his family, leaving Killingworth CT in May 1806 with some family, and bringing the rest in August. He was one of the first town supervisors of LeRoy.
