Married Eliza Shaw Gay in 1832.

On 30 May 1836, Isaac and Eliza, both of the Town of Patterson, New York, sold to Henry Holmes (Isaac's brother) Isaac's share of the two pieces of land, totaling 160 acres, that Elisha (Isaac and Henry's father) owned at death. Isaac received $600.

As noted by David Gunther, in 1838 Isaac was a Trustee for the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Carmel, New York; on 1 November 1845, Isaac was dropped from the membership of the Patterson Baptist Church.

According to notes left by Inez Strauss Spellman, around 1840 (1843?) Isaac and Eliza Holmes left Putnam County, New York, for Mt. Gilead, Morrow County, Ohio. Next, about 1855, they hitched up an ox team and relocated to Avoca, Iowa County, Wisconsin. Isaac and Eliza purchased some land up in the hills beyond the Leach place. Supposedly the stone fences that Isaac and Eliza built on this land still remain. Isaac was the Justice of the Peace for Avoca, Wisconsin. Isaac was referred to as Squire Holmes by his neighbors.

The General Land Office records for Wisconsin record that Isaac S. Holmes received 80 acres of land on 1 June 1858 in Iowa County, Wisconsin.

Isaac's obituary, hand-dated September 28, 1888, is shown below.

Mr. Isaac Holmes departed this life on Monday at 2 p.m., at the age of 81 years. He leaves a loving wife, three daughters and two sons to mourn his loss. Mr. Holmes has been in ill health for some years, but able to be about most of the time until six months prior to his death. He was born in the state of New York emigrating from thence to Ohio, and 35 years ago he moved to Wisconsin and located at or near where he died. He was a quiet, honest neighbor and leaves a large circle of acquaintances who will miss him. A son and daughter live in Colorado and were not present at the funeral, which took place from the White Church Wednesday morning, the Rev. W. C. Ross officiating.

According to the Civil War pension record of William Henry Holmes, a notary public certified "that I, on this date, October 11th 1915 examined the Family Bible of Isaac Holmes and that I find there recorded his name recorded as born January 20th 1808. Eliza Holmes (his wife) born May 30th 1809.

"I find recorded, dates and names of children when born as follows.
Hannah Holmes born April 12th 1833
Eliza Jane Holmes born May 8th 1835
Margaret Holmes born June 26th 1837
John Jacob Holmes born January 7th 1840
William Henry Holmes born July 12th 1842
David Holmes born October 2nd 1845
Albert S. Holmes born January 20th 1850

"The above mentioned Family Bible was published by Roby, Kimball and Merrill in 1836 and Luther Roby Printer.

"The entries are made with pen and ink, and the appearance is such as to show that the entries were made long ago. There are no marks of erasures in the record or alterations."

Earlier, a different notary public (this one in Hudson, St. Croix County, Wisconsin) certified the following statement by Albert S. Holmes.

"In the matter of Pension Claim of William Henry Holmes, member of the 6th Wisconsin Battery during the Civil War 1861-1865.

"I Albert S. Holmes, being first duly sworn, do depose as follows:- That I am a brother of William Henry Holmes, that the correct record of births and deaths of my brothers and sisters was kept in the old family bible, in the hand writing of my father, Isaac Holmes, said record is as follows:
'William Henry Holmes the son of Isaac and his wife Eliza Holmes, was born on the 12th day of July 1842.'
That the old family bible is now in possession of my niece, Mrs. Jessie Sanders, whose post office address is Postville, Allamaukee County, Iowa."
-------------------------------------------------

Note: As far as the family Bible (apparently) having Albert's birth as January 20, 1850, when it has been listed as January 29, 1849, I don't have a definitive answer. It's possible that it was not copied correctly (1849 vs. 1850) and the 29 looked like 20.
