W.J. Cook of Carneiro, Kansas, died at the
home of his son, Perry O. Cook in Salina,
Kansas on Sunday morning, January 3,
1915, at the age of 82 years, 9 months and
14 days. Mr. Cook’s remains were taken
to Carneiro, where burial was on Tuesday,
January 5, with Reverend Elam officiated.

Mr. Cook’s death came as a great surprise,
he had been in Salina only a few days to
visit his son. When he left home he was
apparently in his usual health. Death was
due to acute gastro enteritis and his age.

Willis Jefferson Cook was born in Rush
County, Indiana on March 19, 1832, and
came to Kansas in 1879. He lived in
Marshall County about seven years, then
coming to Carneiro in 1896, twenty-eight
years ago.

During the Civil War he served in Co. I,
84th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was
a member of the Ellisworth Post No. 22,
G.A.R. and was the only veteran of the
Civil War in Carneiro township.

Mr. Cook was married to Martha Ann
Howes, in Blackford County, Indiana on
August 24, 1856. Mrs. Cook passed
away at Frankfort, Kansas on January
27, 1881. Mr. Cook married Sarah Jane
Ewing at Carneiro on September 13, 1885.

Mr. Cook is survived by his wife and ten
children, seven sons and three daughters.
four brothers and three sisters live in
Indiana; forty-three grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.

The children are Joseph A. Cook and Mary
Caroline Leupold of Frankfort, Kansas,
Alice E. Life, Marysville, Kansas, James
M. Cook, Charlie O, Cook, Edward H.
Cook, Martha A. Cook, Benjamin H. Cook
All of Carneiro, Kansas, Perry D. Cook of
Salina, Kansas and John C. Cook of
Rogers, Arkansas.
