Maurice Shomaker Millett

February 7, 1938 ~ December 5, 2015

Maurice Shomaker Millett, 77, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2015 in Provo, Utah. He was born on February 7, 1938 in Seattle, Washington, to George Unthank Millett and Abigail Shomaker.

He was raised in West Seattle, and later moved to Redondo Beach, California. He graduated from Redondo Union High School, where he met his eternal companion Diane. After graduation he attended BYU.

Maurice married Diane Green on December 28, 1957 in the Los Angeles California LDS Temple. Together they raised 6 children while living in California and Utah. Maurice worked in the banking industry as a loan officer and branch manager at Southland National Bank and Crocker National Bank in California, and First Security Bank in Utah. He spent many happy years in Yucaipa, California and later in Duchesne, Utah.

Maurice and Diane moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah in 1984 where he lived for nearly 30 years. After retirement, he served for many years in the Mount Timpanogos Temple and enjoyed working with the wonderful people there. He was an active member of the LDS church and held callings as Seminary Teacher, Gospel Doctrine Teacher, High Priest Group Leader, Bishop and High Councilor.

Maurice had a love of music. He met his wife in his high school madrigal choir, and made lifelong friends from his association with that group. He loved to sing in church choirs, and loved to compose songs for each of his grandchildren. He was a skilled poet, with many works that were published. Maurice was a self-taught artist, and painted many scenes that are treasured by his family.

Maurice had an early interest in cars of all types. He owned more in his lifetime than most of us can count. In his later years he loved his association with other older car enthusiasts as he worked for Larry H. Miller driving cars for dealerships.

One of Maurice’s favorite sayings was, “If I had known how much fun grandchildren are, I would have had them first!” He was loved by all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always had a candy “Poppa Pill” in his shirt pocket for them.

*Maurice is survived by a sister, Beverly, and his six children, 27 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the LDS Chapel located at 325 Canal Drive (approx. 300 N 550 E) in Lindon, Utah. Family and friends may call on Friday evening, December 11, at that church from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, and 9:45-10:45 AM on Saturday, prior to the funeral services.

Interment will be in the American Fork City Cemetery.
