Edith Irene (Baker) Gem passed away on Feb. 21, 2008, in Long Beach, Calif. Edith was born on Oct. 23, 1925, to Robinson Baker and Betty (Crosby) Baker at Battiest.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clarence; two sisters, Gladys Wade and Mary Ann Baker; six brothers, James R. Baker, Daniel Baker, Walter Baker, Floyd Baker, Owen J. Baker and Anderson Winship.

Edith attended schools at Battiest, Wheelock Academy, Millerton, and graduated from high school in 1947 at Chilocco Indian School, Chilocco, Okla. While employed in Oklahoma City, she met and married Clarence Gem in 1953 and eventually relocated to Long Beach, Calif. She lived in Long Beach for almost 55 years.

Edith was one of the original members of Brighter Day Non-denominational Church in Los Angeles, Calif. She was known for her church work, her hospitality and compassion within her community. Her genuine kindness and generosity toward people was a magnet that drew people to her and her home. Edith's cooking and baking were well-known by all who knew her; especially those who had the good fortune to taste her home-baked yeast rolls.

Edith is survived by two daughters, Annette and husband James Kramer of Long Beach, Calif. and Lynette and husband Bill Walker of Cerritos, Calif.; two grandchildren, Barbara Kramer and Matthew Oliver; one brother, Aaron Baker of Battiest; one sister, Sue McDermott of Sapulpa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edith will be greatly missed by many friends and neighbors in her community and relatives in Oklahoma. Funeral services were Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at the Westminister Mortuary Chapel in Westminister, Calif. Interment was at the Garden of Trees in Westminister Memorial Park.
