Howard was buried on September 12, 1953, five days after his 21st birthday. The funeral services were conducted at Christ Episcopal Church, Dearborn, Michigan, Reverend Edward R. A. Green officiating. The following poem, by Franklin Lee Stevenson, was printed in a small tribute folder given to those at the funeral: "For country and his flag he fought upon the battlefield, With proven courage he strode on, Nor would he ever yield, Until the great Commander called The brave one to come home, For a promotion to the skies, From which he shall not roam; So now he sleeps beneath his flag, But we will shed no tear, For from his courage we shall learn To have no thought of fear."
