died 7/9/1908 in Chaska, MN.

John Baptiste Mergens was born in Prussia (Germany) on June 24, 1836.
He was mustered into Company C on April 29, 1861, at the age of 23. His name was recorded on the muster rolls as John B Mayence. John was wounded in the left shoulder at Bull Run. The ball entered his arm about half way between the elbow and his shoulder, coming out near the collar bone. He was captured, sent to Richmond and spent time as a prisoner of war until he was involved in a prisoner exchage. Initially he and the other captured Minnesotans were sent to the Liggons Tobacco Warehouse, which had been converted into a makeshift prison. From there he and others were sent to a prison in Alabama. Later he was exchanged.
His recovery was very slow. On February 6, 1863, he was discharged for disability as a result of the wounds he received at Bull Run.

A COPY OF HIS OBITUARY FROM THE HERALD, CHASKA, MN DATED THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1908 INDICATES THIS AS BEING HIS REAL NAME AND VERIFIES HIS SERVICE IN THIS REGMT & CO PLUS HIS WOUNDING AT BULL RUN AND SUBSEQUENT DISCHARGE. HE DIED ON SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 1908 AND WAS LAID TO REST AT ST HUBERT'S CATHOLIC CEMETERY AT CHANHASSEN, MN. HIS NICKNAME WAS "BOB."
AFTER HE WAS WOUNDED HE WAS CAPTURED BY THE REBELS AND THEN EXCHANGED LATER. HIS WOUNDS TROUBLED HIM UNTIL THE DAY HE DIED.
