Merv was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine, his brothers Jeff and Marshall "Buddy" Chaffee and his sisters, Alicia Maskell and Marsha Crooks.
He is survived by his children, Jay and Martin Chaffee, April Grigsby and her husband, Charles and Penny Dodson and her husband Russell; and a sister Freya Chaffee. Also a special friend and caregiver, Angela Gibson.
Additional survivors include his grandchildren, Amy and Brian Dodson, Richard and Lori Dodson, Stephanie and WL Cash, and Dakota and Shankia Chaffee. 9 Great Grandchildren, Shawn, Megan, Emily, Lee, Garrett, Gary, Jessie, Devin, and Levi.
Merv was born in St. Albans, VT. He was discharged from the National Gaurd in September 1953 then transferred to the Army where he served as a Private 2nd Class in the Korean War as a heavy truck operator. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nation Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal before he was honorable discharged in May 1961. After returning from the war he worked as a heavy equipment operator until he opened his own business Masonry by Merv which he successfully ran for 40 years.
Merv was an avid NASCAR fan, loved his job as a mason, and enjoyed nature and the senic route.
A funeral service will be held Friday, December 11, 2015 at 2pm, Culpeper National Cemetery, 305 US Ave, Culpeper VA 22701 with VFW Post 2524 preforming military honors and Rev John Heddleston officiating. Guest are invited after the funeral to Reynolds Memorial Church, Sperryville VA for food and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to VFW Post 2524 or Autumn Care Rehab Center in Madison VA in his name.
