From Sybil McRay's book. Some say that William Tate was the first white man buried in these parts. Also that the wife is buried at his feet because it was believed that the wife could not enter Heaven unless her husband preceded her. This tale is untrue, the grave of the wife has been located in South Carolina. A relative stated that William was visiting a son when he became ill and died and thus buried in Georgia.
