Alden "Abbey" Abernathy, Jr., age 87, of Winchester, passed away on Thursday, November 26, 2015 at the St. Vincent Randolph Hospital in Winchester.

He was born on January 25, 1928 in Muncie to Alden and Marie (Cox) Abernathy. He was a graduate of Muncie Burris High School and had attended Ball State University. Abbey was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had retired from Maxon Corporation in Muncie. He was also a lifelong farmer in the local area. He attended Main St. Christian Church in Winchester and had been a volunteer at Ball Memorial Hospital for 22 years. He belonged to the Randolph County Antique Tractor Club and the Muncie Moose Lodge. Abbey enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their sporting endeavors. He was known for always helping others and enjoyed being outdoors.

Survivors include his 3 children, Cindy (Jake) Hadix, Todd (Tammy) Abernathy and Joe (Angela) Abernathy, all of Winchester; 10 grandchildren, Curt Hoyt, Tammy Smith, Nicki (Kristin) Bosworth, Kevin (Brittany) Abernathy, Kyle (Michelle) Abernathy, Amber (Jason) Seedorf, Adam (Jaqueline) Abernathy, Derek Sloan, Katy (Bryant) Hoblit and Kelsey Ann (Matt Peden) Abernathy; 27 great grandchildren and one on the way; 1 great great grandchild; 3 sisters-in-law, Maureen Daugherty, Betty Crosley and Shirley Daugherty and 1 niece, Linda Willis.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and cafeteria staff at St. Vincent Randolph Hospital for the compassionate and loving care that they gave to Abbey and his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn Ann (Daugherty) Abernathy; 2 great grandchildren, Brogan Bosworth and Morgan Seedorf; and a brother, Gene Abernathy.

Funeral services for Abbey will be held on Monday, November 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home in Winchester with Rev. Cecil Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Fountain Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

Friends and relatives may call from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home and also one hour prior to services on Monday. Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Vincent Randolph Hospital Foundation, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
