Britton - The Chicago Cubs just lost their biggest fan. Inez Cain Schliebe Gulsvig went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 18, 2006.

Inez was born on a farm near Huffton, S.D., on Dec. 13, 1914, (12-13-14) to Frank and Cora (Holtslander) Cain. Inez graduated from Claremont High School and attended college at Aberdeen Normal College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in rural school until her marriage in 1937 to Dick Schliebe. Farming, baseball and raising four children filled their lives on a farm near Claremont. Inez was proud of Dick's passion for baseball and was always at his side when he played or coached. When he umpired, she would go to the car so she wouldn't hear anyone yell at him. Dick was killed in a car accident in 1956, forcing Inez to move to Britton and resume her teaching career. She taught fifth and sixth grades in Britton and always said, "When you love what you do, it's not a job." And Inez loved her teaching and her students loved her. She married Si Gulsvig of Kidder, S.D., in 1962, and continued teaching until retirement. Besides teaching over 1,000 students, Inez taught Sunday School for over 56 years. During her retirement, she began writing children's stories and her book "Buffalo Friend" was just completed at the publishers. Her official "signing" for the book was scheduled for October and although she can't be here, her family knows she will be smiling as her family and friends enjoy her book. She was on the Library Board and was constantly volunteering to help other people, receiving the "State Good Neighbor" award in Britton. Her family and many friends will always remember her giving ways and how much she loved her family. She will be deeply missed.

Grateful for having shared her life are her surviving children, Rick Schliebe of Denver, Colo., Cherry Luitjens of Custer, S.D., Timothy Schliebe of San Diego, Calif., and Melanie (Joe) Milburn of Durango, Colo.; her stepchildren, Verona (Bill) Martin of Chaffe, N.D., Donetta (Virgil) Hoistad of Rutland, N.D., and Loretta Enderson of Sun City, Ariz.; three sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Pierson of Britton, Betty Beck of Claremont, and Margie Donivan of El Cajon, Calif. She was called "Gramma-Great" Inez and leaves 28 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; a son, Daniel Schliebe; a stepdaughter, Verdell Gulbrunson; three brothers and four sisters.

A celebration of Inez's life will be Friday, Sept. 21, 2006, at St. John's Lutheran Church of Britton. Rev. Christen Prumm will officiate, and burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery of Columbia, S.D. Visitation at the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.
