Richard Lee Oler, known as Dick, passed from this life September 11, 2015. He was born to Tom and Louise (Long) Oler September 5, 1928.

He spent his life in the Watonga area where he worked at the local ice plant, Rice Hardware and with his wife, Joan, at Oler Electric. He will be remembered for his work ethic, quick wit, and inventiveness in solving problems.

He loved aviation, motorcycles, and animals–among other things. Learning his love of flying from his father, Tom, Dick earned his pilot’s license before he was old enough to get his driver’s license. He became a licensed instructor later on. He had many pets throughout his life ranging from skunks to badgers and squirrels–along with the traditional cats and dogs. He often said he loved motorcycle riding to feel the wind in his face. In aviation, he loved flying his glider for much the same reason. He enjoyed flying with the birds, because they “didn’t seem to mind” his joining them.

In 1961, he married Joan White Washmon and her three children. The youngest of the three, would often start a sentence, “When Dad married us….” Joan and Dick were married forty-two years before her death in 2003. They successfully owned and operated Oler Electric with Dick contracting electrical jobs and Joan selling electrical supplies. In addition, they owned RB’s Steak House from 1973 to 1977.

He is survived by his siblings, Bob Oler, Pat Oler Dreiver, and Pete (John) Oler all of Watonga; his children, D’Ann Washmon Chaffin, H. L. Washmon, and Dena Washmon Plaster. Along with four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joan, parents, Tom and Louise, and one nephew.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 15, at 2:00 PM at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Watonga, with Rev. David Johnson officiating.
