Madisonian newspaper--
Abbie Barnett, daughter of Curtis and Sidney Barnett, was born May 19, 1860, near Dexter, IA and departed this life on November 30, 1957 at the age of 97 years, 6 months and 11 days. She was the last surviving member of a family of nine brothers and sisters.
When Abbie was four years old the family moved to a new home in the Bear Creek community, to the farm that continued to be the Curtis Barnett family home until his death, in 1910. In this community Abbie attended country school and the Bear Creek's Friends Church of which she was a birthright member. At the time of the Centennial Observance of the church in July of 1956, she was the oldest member in attendance.
On April 24, 1886, she was united in marriage to Levi Cook near Ashton, Osceola County, Iowa. This was a happy union that endured for more than 62 years. Their relatives and friends joined them in special celebrations of their 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries.
Three sons and three daughters were welcomed into their hearts and home. The youngest son, Howard; the oldest daughter, Belva and a granddaughter, Dorothy, preceded them to the Heavenly Home.
After their marriage Levi and Abbie made their home in Lyon County for almost three years, then moved to Dallas County and lived in or near the Bear Creek neighborhood until 1904. At that time they moved to a new home in Marshal County and later to Spirit Lake, where they resided until the spring of 1912. They then came back to Abbie's childhood home at Bear Creek where Harold Cook now lives. On account of failing health they moved to Earlham where they lived for almost 2 years before the death of her husband, Levi, on November 26, 1948. Since then Aunt Abbie has made her home with her daughter, Nora Noland, where she received faithful and loving care during her declining years.
Aunt Abbie was a loyal member of the Bear Creek Church and a faithful wife and mother. Every one who knew her felt the influence of her sweet Christian character. A life lived as hers was lived is a blessing to any community and no one could have a higher honor that to have it said, "She has lived a good Christian life. She has done what she could."
Four children: Nora (Mrs. Fred ) Noland, Harold Cook, of the Bear Creek community; Elsie (Mrs. Doskey) Crabbs, of Dexter, and Archie Cook of Adel; also 12 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends survive to cherish her memory.
