Arvilla L. Heiman
(January 11, 1920 - November 24, 2015)
Arvilla Leone Good Heiman was born January 11, 1920 on a farm North East of Beloit in the Plum Creek Vicinity. She was the first child of Leon C. Good and Nora Hutton Good. She died on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit at the age of 95.
Arvilla grew up on the family farm and attended Plum Creek Dist 17 school and graduated from Beloit High School in 1938. She was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in 1940 as an operator. Arvilla’s fiancé, Paul W. Heiman and two cousins Dick Walsh and George Poelma moved to Maryland to find employment in the Washington D.C. area in 1941. The plan was that Arvilla would transfer to join him and be married later in the year, however, Paul received his Army notice to leave for service from Mitchell County in the summer.
He returned home and he and Arvilla were united in marriage on July 11, 1941 in a private ceremony at the St. Johns rectory in Beloit by Father Butzer with Joe Ludwig Jr. and Cecelia Mary Carrico as attendants.
Paul left for the service two days later. They later announced their marriage in the fall of 1941 when the Telephone Co. lifted their restrictions of married women working. Arvilla transferred to the Chesapeake and Potomac Co in Washington D.C. where she worked while Paul was stationed at Ft Meade, MD. to train for the invasion of Europe for three months. She followed Paul to Ft Ethan Allen, VT and worked at the New England Telephone Co. while Paul was sent to England and prepared for the D-Day invasion. In the fall of 1945 Paul was discharged and the two of them moved to Kansas City, MO where Paul went to school for Electrical and Refrigeration under the GI bill.
On December 2, 1946 their only child, Larry Paul was born in Kansas City.
After graduation they moved back to Beloit. Arvilla returned to work for the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. as an operator in Beloit and later transferred to the Concordia business office until it closed in 1981. She had 35 years of service with the Telephone Co. with the distinction of 25 years of perfect attendance.
Paul and Arvilla built a home at 702 N. Chestnut in 1963 where she resided until her death. Arvilla was an excellent cook and her family always looked forward to her wonderful meals. She loved her flowers and her gardens were always beautiful. She was from a very close-knit family and spent many family holidays and vacations together until this past summer. Arvilla enjoyed her family and especially her great grand-children and keeping up with their activities.
She was a member of many organizations including the Waconda Chapter of the K.A.A., Communications Workers of America, Mid Kansas Telephone Pioneers of America, a life member of the VFW Auxillary, the D.A.R., State of Kansas and Mitchell Co. Historical Society, State of Kansas and the Waconda Chapter of the Anthropological Association, NCK Geneological Society, a member of the St. John the Baptist Church, and St. Johns Ladies Guild.
