From Hugh's Son Ed Goad
He passed on Friday at age 82, after poor health for 5 months.
I am grateful I got to be with him for most of that time, and was with him at the end.
He died about 200 yards from where he grew up between Laurel Fork and Dugspur, VA...near the Blue Ridge Parkway.
His dad was a moonshiner and farmer. He worked in sawmills, as a bellhop, as a cook in the army in Germany, a factory worker in Delaware, a cattle farmer in Dugspur, apartment manager in Winston-Salem, NC, built 3 houses, and ran Hugo's Trading Post for the past 32 years out of the bed of a tractor trailer.

He liked that someone once said he could make a living tied to a flat rock.
I never knew him to be dishonest or to treat anyone unfairly in his business dealings.
He didnt believe in God or heaven or hell, but lived his life according to his own rules - most of which would be considered good.

He liked to refer to himself as the old man of the mountains, and had many loyal friends and amused acquaintances. His mind was still sharper than mine, and he was strong and active until he got sick. He didnt want a funeral, but there will a memorial service.
