He was married to Elizabeth Blythe "Besse" (Lee) Dovale (1875–1950), the daughter of John Wills Napier Lee (1844–1921) and Mary Core (Thomas) Lee (1848–1893).
Retired from government naval service and living in the Grenada Apartments at 200 25th Avenue North, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, he was 78 years old and married when he died at home of chronic interstitial nephritis on March 10, 1939. Burial was on March 28th in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
Arthur's will was dated February 1, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was probated on April 27, 1939: In it he makes his wife Bessie Lee Dovale the executrix of his estate, and his will also mentions his sister Clarita D Ruthling (ca 1869– ) of Los Angeles, California and his brother-in-law John W N Lee of Nashville. No children are mentioned other than his brother-in-laws son, also John.
