HAWLEY

Henry Hezekiah Hawley, known to most people as "Hez", was born in 1896 in Hunt County, Texas. His mother's maiden name was Pearl Bulls; his father's name was Bradley Finley Hawley, a railroad conductor from Illinois. Hez spent all his early life in East Texas. He was married in Paris, Texas, in 1918 to Alrie Burnett Yates, daughter of Ella Texas Jack and Rueben Burnett Yates. While still in East Texas, four children were born to Hez and Alrie: Henry Hezekiah Hawley, Jr. (also known as "Hez), Bradley Burnett (known as "Bernie", Wanda and Dawn.

In 1926, the Hawley family decided to leave East Texas and move "West". They settled in Spur, Texas, for two years. Hez, Sr. farmed one year and was in the cafe business in Spur for a short time. The family moved from Spur to Stamford, Texas, and resided there for one year. The Hawleys finally arrived in Sweetwater in 1930 and settled on Pine Street. Hez, Sr. worked as a meat market manager for several years at Safeway and Sunbeam Grocery. In 1938, Hez had his own grocery store at 112 W. Broadway. Later on, a store was opened on Lamar Street and at one time, he and his two sons also owned two grocery stores in Abilene.

Alrie was always content to just be a housewife and mother, but when Hez, Jr. and Bernie left Sweetwater in 1942 to enter the Army, Hez, Sr. persuaded Alrie to come to work in the grocery store. The understanding was that Alrie would work until the boys returned from the war. When they did return home in 1946, Alrie was hooked on being "downtown" and seeing the customers every day, so she continued to work in the downtown grocery store until she reached age 65.

The Hawley family joined the First Methodist Church soon after arriving in Sweetwater in 1930. They worked in and supported this same church all these years.

During the 1930's, Hez, Sr. because convinced that ore containing gold was to be found in Nolan County. He grubstaked many prospectors during those years. He took several loads of ore to the smelting plant in El Paso in his Hudson-Terraplane pickup, but was told each time that the gold content in the ore was not enough for profitable mining. Hez, Sr. came out of the Great Depression a staunch Democrat. His feelings carried over to his two sons as both Hez, Jr. and Bernie were always active in the Democratic Party.

Hez, Sr. passed away in 1966 and his wife, Alrie, died in 1984.

The four Hawley children all graduated from Sweetwater High School. They were active in many school activities, including football, tennis, drama and debate. Hez, Jr. married Betty Lee Graves Roy in 1947. Hez, Jr. served four years in the Army during World War II. He was commander of the local National Guard here for several years after the war. He was always active in civic affairs, serving 8 years on the city commission and was mayor for a term or two. He became postmaster in the early 1960's and was still serving in that capacity at the time of his death in 1980.

Wanda was married during World War II to Charles Rosebrough, son of a long-time Sweetwater family doctor. Wanda and Charles settled in Lubbock after the war and they still reside there where Charles is still active in his dentistry practice.

Dawn, after graduating from North Texas State, married Stanley Kennedy of Breckenridge. Dawn recently retired after teaching school for 20 years. The Kennedys now reside in Pasadena, Texas.

The only one left in Sweetwater of the original six Hawleys that arrived in 1930 is Bernie. After graduating from Sweetwater High, Bernie attended the University of Texas in Austin. About that time, World War II came along. Bernie served four years in the Army, was wounded twice in action in France while a rifleman in the 103rd Infantry Division. In 1946, Bernie returned to Sweetwater. It was at this time that he met Pat King. They were married on April 27th of the following year. Pat's parents, Norris Lee King and Fern Burris King, had come to Sweetwater in 1937. Both worked at Sweetwater Cotton Oil Co. for many years. Mr. King built and repaired many cotton gins for the company in the West Texas area. Mrs. King was a bookkeeper for that same company for 35 years before retiring. Mrs. King died in 1978 and Mr. King died in 1984. Pat has one brother, Bob B. King. Bob married a Nolan County native, Gracie Thorman. They have lived in Odessa, Texas, for the last 30 years.

The Hawley family was in the grocery business for 31 years. After selling the business in 1969, Bernie went to work for Sweetwater Savings. He worked there for 12 years. He then went to the First National Bank of Sweetwater where he has been for the last three years as vice president. Bernie and Pat have one son, Bradley B.
