L. Ray Cass, 92, of Pierre, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Onida Cemetery.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at First United Methodist Church in Pierre.

Lewis Ray Cass was born to Jehiel and Effie (Todd) Cass on April 11, 1912, on the family homestead in west Sully County. He lived his first 12 years there on the Missouri River. His family then moved to a second homestead west of Agar where he lived most of his life.

He attended grade school in rural Sully County and Aggie School at SDSU in Brookings. Farming and ranching were his life's vocation.

He married Marjorie Bouchie on May 26, 1937, at the Cass family home and they raised six children on the family farm. Ray and Marjorie moved to Pierre in October of 1992. Marjorie died on April 2, 1993.

Ray married Garnett Whitney-Talley on Sept. 17, 1994, in Washington, D.C. Ray and Garnett made their home in Pierre for the past 10 years.

Ray was active in the Agar United Methodist Church, school board, 4-H, Farm Bureau, Sully County Fair Board and A.S.C.S.

Ray loved his family and could think of nothing more fun than being with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Garnett, of Pierre; three sons, Larry Cass and his wife Gerry of Pierre, Tim Cass and his wife Janie of Pierre, and Steve Cass and his wife Maryann of Blacksburg, Va.; two daughters, Sharon Tisher and her husband Don of Amherst, and Sheila Edwards and her husband Carl of Spearfish; one stepson, Bill Talley and his wife Anne of Florida; two stepdaughters, Jeanne Beck and her husband Mike of California, and Eloise Clark and her husband Jim of Virginia; one brother, Roy, of Gettysburg; 14 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Marjean; two sisters, Gertrude White and Genevieve Brehe; and one brother, James (J.W.) Cass.
