Sweetwater, Aug. 15 - Funeral services were scheduled Tuesday at 4 p.m. for Ruben Newt Carpenter of Sweetwater at the Cate-Spencer Chapel here. The Rev. J. Edmund Kirby of the Sweetwater First Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of Cate-Spencer Funeral Home.
Carpenter, 68, the father of Claude C. Carpenter of Sweetwater, died Sunday night in a Big Spring hospital.
He moved to Roby in 1900 from his birthplace in Hill County and married the former Miss Ella B. Boyd in 1901. They moved to Dawson County in 1915 and from there moved to Littlefield in 1925. In 1945, they came to Sweetwater. Carpenter was a retired farmer and a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include Carpenter's widow, four sons, eight daughters, two brothers and two sisters. The sons are Claude C. Carpenter of Sweetwater, A. B. Carpenter of Crane, Calvin Carpenter of Lamesa and Roy Carpenter of Tucson, Ariz. Daughters are Mrs. R. D. Watkins of Houston, Mary Lee Carpenter of Los Angeles, Calif., Opal Carpenter of Los Angeles, Mrs. Elmer Kimbel of Sudan, Mrs. Woodrow Miller of Mart, Mrs. Elbert Shearer of Plainview, Mrs. Doss Maner of Littlefield and Mrs. Jack James of Plains.
