W. C. CALVERT, 74, NOLAN COUNTY'S SECOND AGRICULTURAL AGENT, DIES IN HIS SLEEP

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday for W. C. Calvert, 74, who died in his sleep at his farm home three miles south of Sweetwater some time Sunday night.

The Rev. Clifford W. Williams, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Calvert had served as a deacon for more than 30 years, officiated, assisted by Rev. William Shropshire, pastor of the First Christian Church, and by the Rev. J. T. McKissick, Abilene, former pastor of the First Christian Church here. Burial was in the Sweetwater Cemetery under direction of Johnston's Funeral Home.

Mr. Calvert was survived by his widow, two sons, W. D. of Sweetwater, and John of Maryneal; three sisters, Mrs. John T. Morgan, Dallas, Mrs. Lizzie Latham and Mrs. C. H. Russell, both of Merkel.

Mr. Calvert was born March 8, 1872 in Tennessee and came to Texas with his parents when he was eight years old. The Calverts came to Nolan County more than 55 years ago.

In 1912, Mr. Calvert was named Nolan County's second agricultural extension agent, a position he filled until he resigned Jan. 1, 1926.

The veteran county agent recalled that when he first began his duties, farmers of the county were still not too friendly toward the extension program, and frequently some of them were openly hostile toward the agent's work.

However, Mr. Calvert concentrated on terracing. Through his understanding of the nature of Nolan County soil and its tendency to wash away, coupled with his knowledge of the farmers of the county, he finally got them interested in terracing the land to prevent washing away of the valuable top soil. In a few years, he had convinced them that the extension agent was created as an agency "not to tell them what to do, but show them how to help themselves".

When he retired from the office in 1926, his work, as well as that of the extension service had been generally accepted as a worthwhile program and his final report to the Nolan County Commissioners' Court, as well as to the extension service, revealed that much had been accomplished, including the establishment of a boys' pig club, planting of a better staple cotton, establishment of more poultry, brood sows and dairy cows on Nolan County farms.

Following his retirement from extension work, he devoted his time to raising dairy cattle, poultry, pecans and vegetables and improving his farm south of the city.

Mr. Calvert had not been ill prior to his death. Mrs. Calvert, who has been ill, went to her husband's bed Monday morning to awaken him and discovered that he had died in his sleep.
