My grandmother Lou Emma McCarty Bishop died after having twins in 1908. She is buried in the Bishop plot in Sweetwater. The way I understand it, Lanell, one of the twins, was taken by my Emma's parents, Jacob and Nancy McCarty, in Duffau to care for. She does not have a tombstone to my knowledge and I imagine she was buried in the Duffau Cemetery where Jacob and Nancy are buried.

The other twin, Lenora was given to an O'Keefe family here to raise. That's why her middle name is O'Keefe. Lenora married Estes Earl Daugherty on August 16, 1928 in Sweetwater. She died March 25, 1950 in Drumwright, Oklahoma.

Scott Vernon Bishop, one of Emma's sons buried in the Bishop plot, is in a group picture of boy scouts at the Sweetwater museum. He died of appendicitis at a young age.

Bessie Bernice died at an early age from meningitis caused from a tumor on the brain.

Daddy didn't marry until he was 42, marrying December 20, 1936, and supported the Bishop family during the Depression working as the tax collector/assessor for Nolan County. His father had a grain store in Sweetwater, the way I understand it, and Daddy quit school in the eighth grade to help his father at the store. He said that was where he learned to speak some Spanish.

Daddy was in WWI and went overseas to France in a ship. Back then there were no airplanes to fly the troops over. Daddy told how seasick they all were. His father's full name was James Jackson Sydney Ham Perry Bishop, named after his grandfather, James Richard Bishop's father.

James Richard Bishop, buried at Sweetwater Cemetery, was Daddy's grandfather. He was in the Civil War and Daddy said he had buckshot in his legs from the war. Mary Salome Hogg Bishop, James Richard Bishop's wife, was a first cousin of James Stephen Hogg, the governor of Texas.

I've sent all my family group sheets to the Salt Lake Library for permanent record.
