JOHN HORATIO BARDWELL
John Horatio Bardwell was born August 8, 1853, in Starkville, Mississippi. Mollie Aiken was born March 25, 1854, also in Starkville. They were married in Gonzales, Texas, in 1877.
In 1882, Mr. and Mrs. Bardwell and two young sons, Jim and Glenn, moved from Gonzales to Nolan County, settling in the Bitter Creek Community. Their home was a dugout on the east bank of Bitter Creek until they could build a house.
Children born to the couple in Nolan County were Brainard, Nella, Dave, John, Jr., Annie and Lilla. All the children attended school at Bitter Creek.
The family also attended church at Bitter Creek. A Presbyterian Church was later organized in Sweetwater. For a time, it was known as the Bardwell Church and had 11 members.
Mothers of the couple, Mrs. E. M. Bardwell and Mrs. Emma Smithson, made their home with the family. Mrs. E. M. Bardwell enjoyed handwork, and a quilt that she made in 1857 is on display in the Pioneer City-County Museum.
The Bardwells raised cattle, mules and horses, holding large round-ups when mule buyers were in the area. The family had hounds and hunting was a favorite pastime.
Holidays were special occasions for all the children and their families to come home. Turkey and dressing, pies and cakes were the usual fare and the family fondly remembers the large crock jar filled with layers of sliced oranges and fresh grated coconut, that they called "ambrosia".
Descendants of the couple still get together on the Sunday before Labor Day for a family reunion which celebrated its 31st year in 1984.
Lilla lives in Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Dave Bardwell and Mrs. John Bardwell live in Sweetwater.
Grandchildren living in Nolan County are Ora Lee Bennett, Horatio Bardwell, Eva King, Della Clark, Weldon Bardwell, Leland Bardwell and Dora M. Burklow.
Jim, Lula and Ada Bardwell, Glenn and Mattie Bardwell, Brainard and Annie Bardwell, Dave and John, Jr. are all buried at Sweetwater Cemetery as are their parents and grandmothers. Nella and Mark Collins are buried at Nolan, Texas; and Annie and Ernest Gibson are buried in Amarillo, Texas.
